Coleman was from Lancashire and born in the town of Blackpool. She attended Arnold School in Blackpool. She was a headgirl and earned straight A grades in her A-Levels. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on the 21st of March that Coleman was set to portray Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion following the departure of Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other characters left the show. Moffat chose her for the role due to her being the most efficient in her interactions with Smith and was able to speak faster than him. The actress has three marriages and has a daughter who is along with her husband.
